Is Antagonism Good for Business?

In real life I'm a political junkie. I'm actually not a fan of politics in general, but I keep a strong eye on things.
I worry about the impending collapse of the dollar, the ever invasive expansion of big government, and United States interventions around the globe.
The 2012 election is right around the corner. The attack ads haven't quite kicked into full gear just yet, but they will. Candidates are attacking each other already through their intermediaries. Sometimes this is done through the media and sometimes it's done through personal aides and allies.
Attack ads work. I don't like them. But, they have been around since the time of Thomas Jefferson, and even back in the olden days they were much more vicious than they were today. (Believe it or not)
So how am I attempting to draw a correlation here to the female fighting industry? To begin..........the industry lacks storylines. The story telling is quite pathetic in most cases. The depth of character with most females is not good because so many do this on a part time basis. It's understandable on their part, because the money might not be there, but the fact remains.
Fans like to invest emotionally and financially into great story telling. If the story telling is lacking it's not the end of the world. Fans like big name matchups. Things they have never seen before. For example, anyone that was a fan of the WWF back in the day knew that the Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan was a BIG matchup. You can actually insert Hulk Hogan vs (insert name here) and often times it would be a big draw.
Take for instance Hulk Hogan vs The Rock.
Or Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage.
I'm not sure if the female fighting industry has a "Hulk Hogan" as of yet. But...........I digress.
The title of this article asks if antagonism is good for business?
Here are some examples of what I am speaking of I have uncovered at the Catfight Report:
Tylene Buck & Kimberly Page - Tylene reported on video that they had a real catfight in the shower at WCW and Tylene actually challenged Kim to a real catfight. I contacted Kim's boyfriend and he said the chances of Kimberly Page accepting were akin to her "skateboarding to the moon".
Francesca Le & Andie Valentino - Francesca described in a video interview about how a match with Andie Valentino got a "little too real". While it was certainly not visually as wild as Francesca seemed to imply, it was still interesting. You can purchase that video HERE.
Christine Dupree & Onyx - Christine stated in a video interview how she didn't (paraphrasing) like Onyx's attitude. Out of this..........I set up a feud at Catfight Fantasy Girls. Both ladies do wrestle for real but Christine Dupree has not responded to my emails for quite some time.
Sable & Sunny - Back when I was sending out Catfight Report Challenges...........Sunny was willing to take on Sable. However, she didn't want a wrestling match, she wanted it to be an MMA fight. However, I could never find a way to contact Sable to try to make it happen.
Alexis Skye & Mikayla Miles - Mikayla was certain she could beat Alexis in a matchup and Alexis was certain she could beat Mikayla in a real matchup. However, everytime I tried to set it up, neither side seemed willing to do it. Mikayla says Alexis would never face her. Alexis, after posting on my Myspace page that she takes MMA and could "take" Mikayla, never responded to my emails after that.
These are not all of the examples but this gives fans a decent idea. Wouldn't these matches be more interesting to watch than another Dia Zerva vs Ariel X matchup? Now, before fans jump all over me, I think Dia and Ariel are fantastic performers. I think it's a building feud and they are good friends. But, in my opinion, and perhaps my opinion only, it's the same ole same ole.
I think a little antagonism.............real or fake........leads to more interest.
It's fine if the performers are friends. But, the stakes can always be raised. Stipulations can be added. I can't tell you how many times Double Trouble has put JC Marie vs Tylene Buck against one another. There is some variance in a lot of the matches but essentially it's the same thing over and over again in my opinion.
I remember the old WCW vs WWF feud way back. I remember when Degeneration X actually "invaded" a WCW show and tried to get inside. The ratings between the two companies were smoking hot at the time. It was good business. It was smart business. Producers in this industry very rarely work with other producers in the genre.
On this note..............let me give another scenario using Ariel X as my example.
What about Ariel X vs Luna of DWW?
I think that would be a hell of a match! It's something the fans have never seen before. There are bragging rights in terms of which country has the better girl. It's the USA vs Europe. It's an Ultimate Surrender product vs a Danube Women's Wrestling product.
Consider this: Say Ariel X writes a blog post and then makes a video challenging Luna of DWW to come to the United States to face her in a real wrestling match. She can tell the fans if they want to see it happen.........and to email her to help her build the funds to get Luna here.
Ariel could keep the video rights, split them, or give them to a company shooting it. This is one example of many where a girl in the industry can not only increase fan interest.........but possibly make more money.
There is not enough of this.
Where is the harm?
Is Luna going to file a lawsuit because Ariel X challenged her on video?
Doubtful!
Luna is going to probably get fired up, in a good way, and want to take Ariel X down on the mats for challenging her. I doubt Luna is going to think Ariel X is a bad person, or unprofessional, as long as Ariel would play it right when issuing the challenge and video.
Note: The Catfight Report is a willing conduit for all in the industry, producers and females, who want to creatively reach the fans out there.
This industry is built on female vs female combat. No producer worth his/her salt is going to let the girls REALLY hurt each other. If they do........they are a scumbag. Also, most of the girls out there have large Twitter, Facebook, and social network followings. They will bury any producer that tries to do something out of line.
When I speak of antagonism it doesn't always have to be two girls who hate each other's guts. However, I will also say, it doesn't hurt! I try hard in my Catfight Report interviews to preface to the girls before they send me their answers to remember their audience that is reading the interview! Namely...........people who come to this website love catfights and female wrestling. They enjoy real descriptions of catfights that happened in the girl's lifetimes or backstage scenarios where things got out of hand.
To me...........this should be advertised. The main excuse is usually one of "professionalism". In most industries I would agree with this. In THIS industry............I don't. I think that clever females and producers should find ways to exploit these things in a way that is agreeable with both females when things happen.
I don't know this for a fact..........but someone once said that Summer Cummings and Tanya Danielle don't get along. Even if they do get along, for the sake of this article, let's assume they don't. I see a couple of ways to go. One way would to be to put them in a real, unscripted wrestling match, and have them cut promos on each other beforehand to build fan interest.
A lot of girls won't want to go this route because they are models first and wrestlers second. Fine! I would then say that they could use an intermediary to work between them, still do the promos, and then set up a scripted match where maybe the fans vote on the winner or something of that nature.
The girls could then only agree to face each other in a tightly controlled environment with a producer they trust.
Why is there not more of this?
Am I out of line or am I on to something?

Kendra Ray (AKA Candence Calabrese) vs Jamee Scolari
I covered Kendra Ray in a previous Catfight Report Internet Magazine and she is not only an impressive female wrestler but she is also a sizzling hot female that is chock full of confidence.
I wrote earlier about how sometimes I personally feel that a lot of the producers lack scenarios that entail good storytelling. The following match is an interesting case of good storytelling that evolved from one woman's desire to defeat and humiliate her opponent.

Here is the description of this matchup from Academy Wrestling:
Blond Kendra Ray (AKA Candence Calabrese) came to us with a compelling proposal. She asked for two hours of training from Isamar because she really wanted to wrestle Jamee Scolari and win. While Isamar was happy to accept a training fee, Kendra volunteered to pay for it by discounting her fee for her match against brunette Jamee Scolari.
We rather like it when women volunteer to train, allow Isamar to do the training, and come to us with a specific proposal for who they want to fight.
Jamee is nine years Kendra’s senior and has had three times as many matches, but Jamee had taken over a year off from shooting and had only recently re-started her cardio training. Despite having been a bit rusty, the last time Jamee was here in September 2007 she dropped and beating and brutal fucking on Mira Li Wen (see SOAP 144).
Despite having fresh, new skills, motivation, and youth on her side Kendra’s; we still didn’t think she had a prayer with Jamee. But they always settle it on the mat, not on paper, and with both women scoring submissions its anyone’s match until the final five minutes when one takes full control and never relinquishes it through a very dominating victory fuck.
Ringo's Review:
This match is as advertised. I like the aspect of it. Kendra paid for training to specifically face Jamee Scolari and defeat her. The question is..............did it work? Was Kendra able to get the job done? Or did Jamee Scolari shove it in Kendra's face and make the effort all for not?

I think feuds, factions and the like would help producers. It would create suspense and keep customers coming back for more.
The problem, as I see it, is that so many of the performers work for so many different producers. If Cali Logan and Emily Addison had a feud going (be still, my beating heart) at Double Trouble, how would it carry over when they appeared at XCW or Maidens of Mayhem?
I think the XCW and Ring Divas folks have taken a couple of steps in the right direction with this, but it would be great to build the thing even further. But I think you'd find it harder to get the producers on board than the talent.
