Catfight Report Movie Review: The Roommate

THE ROOMMATE
Minka Kelly (Sara) vs Leighton Meester (Rebecca)

Oh.......those crazy roommates!

All of us have suffered a crazy roommate at one time or another, but chances are slim that you ever encountered a roommate as crazy as Leighton Meester's character in the 2011 release aptly named "The Roommate".

Here is the description from poster on IMBD:

Fresh from Des Moines, Iowa, Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) has just landed in Los Angeles as a college freshman studying fashion design. She meets handsome Stephen, party-lover Tracy, and roommate Rebecca. Rebecca (Leighton Meester) is nice, sweet and ready to share everything with Sara. It could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. But Tracy is convinced that there's something seriously wrong with Rebecca and bad things start happening to everyone close to Sara. If Sara is to have a normal college experience, she's going to have to get to the bottom of what's up with Rebecca and quickly get out of her clutches.    Written by napierslogs

The two lead actresses are very beautiful, and it's no task to watch them for a long period of time, and the movie also features the scorching hot Alyson Michalka (Tracy) as an added bonus.   Aside from that, I would have to label this a "fast-forward" movie in my book.

What kills me here, is that this is a movie that could have been great.

You got two very hot college girls.  One becomes EXTREMELY possessive of the other woman.  For example, when Sara comes home from a date with a guy, Rebecca storms out, chides Sara for not answering her phone calls, and then storms off.

You could feel the lesbian tension!

Well, or so I thought.   But, then again, this is a Hollywood production so I should have known that I would have no such luck.   Now, mind you, in Hollywood they always "tease".  Sara was sitting at a table with her new boyfriend when he suggested that maybe Rebecca liked Sara "in that way".  (chuckle, chuckle)

Way to tease us producers.   Way to tease us.  We do get a scene a bit later where Rebecca does kiss and seduce a woman in a bathroom, only to take her back and leave her tied up for the final scene.

But, anyway, forget the tease, let's get to some substance.

Let's get to the first catfight!    Meow!

The scorching Alyson Michalka (Tracy) is taking a shower when suddenly the lights go off in the locker room area she is in.   Rebecca is looking to teach Tracy a lesson.  Namely, that Tracy is a bad influence on her new roommate and best friend Sara.........and she is going to let her know about it.

When the lights go off............Tracy walks around the place and looks around.........only to find nobody.  However, she knows exactly who it was, as Rebecca had been giving her evil stare downs for the last couple of days.

Tracy decides to step back into the shower as she mutters "Bitch"........and suddenly somebody comes through the curtain...........and low and behold...........it is indeed Rebecca.  Rebecca pushes her face against the ground, warns her to stay away from Sara, to not mention this conversation, and then she rips her belly button out for good measure.

I was disappointed that they scripted a character as hot as Alyson Michalka (Tracy) to be such a total wimp.   Earlier on you got the impression that she might be tough as she had a party girl/bitchy attitude.

But, whatever.    They make the movies.  I just report on the what they churn out.  ;)

The Catfight:

All movie long has been building to the climax, where Rebecca has a girl tied on the bed, and Sara is pleading with her not to kill her.   Sara gets close, and gets whopped in the face with the back of Rebecca's gun and then falls on the floor.

Rebecca then apologies profusely and goes over to help her up.

Sara finally retaliates against the crazed woman and knocks her off of her.  She goes over to help her friend on the bed, who has a bag over her head, but is pulled back by Rebecca.  Sara slams her backwards into the wall, but Rebecca tackles her to the ground, and then strikes her.

Rebecca then quickly gets up and leaves the room as she looks around in the adjacent room for her spare gun.

Sara then slams the door shut, and locks it, as Rebecca protests and bangs on the door while screaming Sara's name wildly.   Sara removes the bag from her friend's head, but the phone is cut, and they are too high up off the ground to jump out the window.

Sara tries to crawl on the window panel to the fire escape, as her friend remains tied up in the bed.  Sara busts in, is about to shoot her friend, but then Sara's boyfriend appears, tackles Rebecca, they have a struggle, and Sara gets shot in the window as she clings for life hanging by the curtains.

Her boyfriend mounts Rebecca and nails her with a hard punch to the face.   He thinks she is knocked out, as he goes over to help Sara, but as he almost has her pulled up, Rebecca plants a sharp object into his back as he collapses to the side.

To Sara's surprise..........Rebecca pulls her up..........and she crawls over to her downed boyfriend.   Sara grabs the gun and tries in vain to shoot Rebecca, but no bullets are left.  She tries many times, and this angers Rebecca, as she can't believe it.

Now the catfight begins!

Meow!

Rebecca slams a backwards fist against Sara's face and roughly slams her into the wall.   Sara falls to the ground, and Rebecca tries to follow up, but get kicked in the face.   However, Rebecca is not deterred, as she smashes a glass vase against the back of Sara's neck, and mounts her as Sara is facing down.

Rebecca then powers Sara over to the dresser with the mirror behind it and starts choking her with all of her strength.  Sara puts up a good struggle, but finally, her movements go limp as Rebecca smiles.   Instead, Sara muses, "You will never be my friend" and then jams a sharp object in Rebecca's back as she falls to the side...........seemingly dead.

Sara, however, wants the necklace on her neck, as she reaches down to retrieve it.  An out of it Rebecca snatches Sara's wrist, holding it in place, and the drifts off to sleep forever.

And............that's all folks.

The catfight was ok by Hollywood standards.............of which...........is really not much to be excited about really.   I remember some websites reporting this would be the "Mother of all Catfights".   Talk about hype.  It's always hype, hype, hype when it comes to a possible catfight.

However, if you want to buy this, feel free to be my guest.   Again, I guess it's a decent bout, but I doubt it's anything you are going to want to watch twice.

Raze - A New Movie where kidnapped Ladies are forced to fight to the Death

RAZE - THE MOVIE

Well, here we go again folks.

First, was the buzz from the movie "Bare Knuckles". Then there was some buzz from the movie "Lure". I interviewed the producers of both productions here at the Catfight Report.

Catfight fans have carrots dangled in front of them constantly.

Nobody, with perhaps the exception of myself, said anything nice in the industry about Lure or Bare Knuckles. Both movies advertised themselves heavily with the sweet nugget of some female vs female combat, but neither movie really delivered the goods.

Now, it's time for the buzz machine to begin once more.

A new movie named "Raze" is being produced by Robert Beaucage and Josh C Waller and stars Zoe Bell and Rachel Nichols. Rachel Nichols has been making quite a name of herself with catfight fans as she has now had catfights in GI Joe and Conan the Barbarian.

There were also reports that Rachel Nichols enjoyed shooting the catfights mentioned, of which, makes her a natural fit. Zoe Bell is, by all accounts, a fantastic stuntwoman and has doubled for ladies such as Uma Thurman (in Kill Bill), Lucy Lawless (in Xena), Sharon Stone (in Catwoman) and has a very nice resume built up.

Horror.com interviewed Producers Robert Beaucage and Josh C Waller.

Here are some excerpts:

Waller: Both Rachel and Zoë have been friends of mine for years. Both are incredible actors who I feel like hadn't done something like this. Zoë and I had been trying to find something to work on together for years. When this came along, she was the obvious choice because of her stunt background, but she also possesses a beautiful emotional life as an actress. This is a world where both would be needed. Rachel also has done a lot of great roles that have called upon her physicality, but not like this. Plus, the film starts off in an almost romcom-type way. Rachel is one of the most talented and funniest people I know. It was a no-brainer. I consider it an honor to work with both of them.

Beaucage: Rachel plays Jamie, a workaholic, somewhat standoffish woman whom we first meet being talked into going on a blind date. She meets Zoë's character, Sabrina, when she and Sabrina are put into an arena where they must fight or die -- just like the tagline says! Zoë, with her background in stunts in addition to her acting chops, was a natural choice both to play Sabrina and also to be stunt coordinator.

Is the 'fight or die' tagline meant to evoke memories of movies like The Running Man and Rollerball?

Beaucage: Ha! No.

Waller: As much as I love those movies, no. (All respect given to Richard Dawson.)

Who's the audience for Raze?

Beaucage: Horror fans, action fans, and people who want to see the most kick-ass girl fights of any movie ever. As Kenny puts it, we're bringing catfights to a whole new level!

Catfight Fans!

Is this another Ronald Reaganesque scenario? One of those.........."There you go again!" type moments? Beaucage says that they are bringing catfights to a whole new level and that this will have the most kick-ass girlfights of any movie ever.

We have heard that before.

But, you always gotta appreciate when someone is willing to put their resources on the line to bring something to the fans out there. I wish Robert, Josh, Zoe, Rachel, and the rest of the cast all the success in the world.
