From the Movie TV Catfight Alert Yahoo Board
No good news here but not unexpected.
When it was announced last year that Gina Carano, the so-called "face of female
mixed martial arts," would jump to the big screen as an action chick, some of
us hoped her film debut would include at least some female combat. Alas, Steven
Soderbergh's Knockout (now renamed Haywire and tentatively scheduled for release
in April 2011) looks to be a disappointment. Reportedly a rough cut of the film
is making the rounds and while there are supposedly several fight scenes
involving Ms. Carano (playing a spy on the run in a role some describe as a
female Jason Bourne), I have yet to come across a single report of her facing
off against any women. In fact, the cast list on IMDb does not currently list
a single woman besides Ms. Carano!
I personally think Soderbergh is hit or miss as a director, and perhaps he
thought having his female action lead face a female adversary would be
pandering, but who knows. Maybe someone showed him Ms. Carano's final (and
heavily promoted) title fight in the MMA ring, in which a no-neck female
fighter (nicknamed Cyborg) finished off Ms. Carano in a single round.
